Daewoo

Daewoo (Korean: 대우, English: Daewoo) was a Korean conglomerate, founded on March 22, 1967 by Kim Woo-chung, in Seoul. Daewoo’s name comes from two parts (Dae) which means great in Korean and (woo) which is taken from the name of the company’s founder.

Before the Asian financial crisis in 1997, Daewoo was the second largest company in South Korea after Hyundai. Daewoo had more than 20 subsidiaries and affiliates, some of which, such as Daewoo Electronics, Tata Daewoo and Daewoo Shipbuilding, operate today as independent companies in various industrial fields. But its car factories were sold to General Motors, which today forms GM Korea.
